Mercedes finally entered the pickup truck segment with the X-Class mid-size truck. The truck debuted for the 2018 model year and it brings Mercedes’s touch of luxury and comfort while also delivering tough capabilities. We all know that Mercedes hasn’t invented ist pickup truck from the ground up as it exploits the revised chassis, engine, suspension and drivetrain from the global Nissan Navara. However, the look, interior and technology are made according to Mercedes’ standards.
The current, 2018 version of the X-Class truck comes with Nissan’s turbodiesel engine which has versions with the single or two turbochargers. The next version, 2019 Mercedes X-Class is, however, expected to add new diesel version the X350d 4Matic which uses company’s oil burner. Other changes will include new color options, some changes in the equipment offer and possibly a new trim option. On the other hand, there are no signs yet that upcoming version will travel to the US.
2019 Mercedes X-Class: Design
As we mentioned, Mercedes borrowed some parts from the durable and dependable Nissan Navara. Behind the brand-specific styling, the X-Class the ladder frame, suspensions, engine, and drivetrain from the global Navara although Mercedes made some revisions. The X-Class is slightly wider and has a wider track than the Navara which should have a positive impact on the ride and towing stability.
On the other hand, from the visual perspective, the X-Class is a different story than the platform donor. The model looks like Mercedes truck should look. It shares the same design language as brand’s SUVs and massive three-pointed star dominates on brand’s two-bar grille version. Accentuated headlights and tall, sculpted hood also add more charm. The rear has vertical taillights and simple tailgate.
The new 2019 Mercedes X-Class won’t, of course, change much and we should expect new color patterns, wheel designs and new trim version.
Interior, Equipment:
Interior built and quality is up to expectations that we get in other brand’s vehicles. The X-Class boasts high-quality materials and surfaces plus high-comfort seats. The model is also the step forward the Navara when it comes to the sound insulation.
The X-Class has the dash design with brand’s familiar elements and the model comes with the latest COMAND infotainment system. The base version has hard plastic surfaces but will offer most of the tech and active safety features. The next trim will upgrade with softer surfaces and nicer exterior details. The top-of-the-line models will apply stitched leather upholstery with wood and aluminum details.
