VW Amarok is among the best picks in the mid-size class and the truck continues to get praise for its comfortable ride, strong V-6 turbodiesel engine and high-quality cabin. The model continues to live on dividends from the 2017 model year refresh when the model replaced the old 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI with the new 3.0-liter V-6 TDI. It was a surprise when VW made this move in the era of the engine downsizing trend but it proved as a right step.
However, there are rumors spreading that VW is considering another radical step with the popular Amarok truck. As some reports suggest the car giant might offer a special version of the mid-size truck equipped with the potent V-8 TDI engine. The news uncommented by VW come shortly after the brand revealed a recently redesigned VW Touareg armed with the mighty 4.0-liter turbodiesel V-8. The model was reported as the 2020 Volkswagen Amarok V8 Edition but there is no solid evidence that this will happen so far.
2020 Volkswagen Amarok V8 Edition: Performance
If the 2020 Volkswagen Amarok V8 Edition turns out to be true, but highly unlikely, it won’t be the first Amarok of that kind. The 2016 Amarok V-8 Desert Edition build by the aftermarket firm MTM has a mighty 4.2-liter twin-turbo diesel V-8 under the hood. The Audi-sourced engine had a potential for 410 hp and torque of 686 pound-feet between 2,000-3,000 rpm. With that under the hood, the mid-size truck needed 6 seconds to reach 62 miles.
This time the rumors suggest a similar outcome but with a few changes. The new Amarok version should use a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V-8 diesel engine used in the Audi SQ7 and recently implemented in the VW Touareg. The monster engine should feed the Amarok with about 415 hp and 663 pound-feet of torque. The 8-speed automatic transmission should be used to route power to the 4Motion system.
The performance model should also use more of the upgraded running gear to keep it on the track. The upgraded suspension components front and rear combined with the more capable braking system should control the model and bring it to the stop effectively.
2020 Volkswagen Amarok V8 Edition: Design
No spy photos appeared to support reports about the 2020 Volkswagen Amarok V8 Edition arrival. The model is, however, reported to come with special exterior and interior treatment.
The model should include a special grille version and wider, uniquely painted fender flares. The front section should also get unique bumper and protection. The difference would also make large, special-design wheels in size around 20 inches and wrapped in all-terrain tires.
The cabin of the model should get Alcantara treatment combined with carbon fiber and bright trim pieces. The premium sound system and large center touchscreen with sat-nav should also found the place in the cockpit.
The sports, multifunctional steering wheel and supportive seats will also be the part of the deal as the reports claim. The model could get additional active safety equipment as well.
2020 Volkswagen Amarok V8 Edition: Release, Price
VW hasn’t hinted the possibility of the twin-turbo V-8 diesel engine under the hood of the Amarok truck so far. The 2020 Volkswagen Amarok V8 Edition should arrive late in the year, reports suggest. No word about the price but it would cost much more than regular Amarok now.
